Yoga to me....
What does “practicing yoga” mean to me? Well, to start with, it shouldn’t be scary, or intimidating. It should
be a time and a place to experiment and trust yourself; and to explore, yet respect your limits. Finding
acceptance with yourself and with your body may just be the biggest (and often most challenging) goals of
yoga. Acknowledging the things you can do with breeze, with the same gratitude as the poses or ideas that
come as a challenge, can be quite the aspiration. Perhaps one that constantly needs checking and encouraging.
(Both in yoga class and in “life!”) The idea is to be kind to yourself. It’s only yoga! Allow yourself to be open
to let your purest, favorite “you” blossom. Let your yoga practice be more than "your exercise." Let it be a
place where you can find your truest self; where you don't allow fear or insecurity sabotage your efforts of
"becoming."
With all that being said, my hope is that you have a good time and that you leave feeling better than when you
came. It is a place where you get to step outside the everyday hustle and stress and where you don’t have to
be “the best!” Your yoga will grow and evolve as much as you let it.
When I first started teaching I had a strong Iyengar base. Now, my practice still has ties to Iyengar, but with
more of a FLOW or "vinyasa" feel. I include some of my favorite aspects of a variety of other styles,
including Viniyoga, Ashtanga, Shiva Rea Flow and Jivamukti. Depending on your sources, vinyasa can mean ~
"the order in which postures are placed - the science of sequencing" (Viniyoga approach) or ~ "breath-
synchronized movement . The breath is the heart of this discipline and links asana to asana in a precise order."
(Ashtanga approach) With more practice, the more you'll be able to "flow." The benefits of a consistent yoga
(asana) practice combined with proper breathing techniques (pranyama) are different for every person. They
can even change from day to day.
Yoga practice can help you:
• Increase your awareness of the connections among body, mind and spirit
• Reduce stress and its health related issues
• Learn calming strategies to take outside class
• Increase strength and flexibility
• Rejuvenate and provide energy needed to carry on every day tasks!
• Decrease sense of depression
• **And there are many others!!
